Esta escrito en la historia que en la época de la conquista de Venezuela
los Alemanes (Ambosio de Alfinger) y españoles, un contigente de estos entro por el LAGO DE MARACAIBO.

Varios de estos conquistadores tenían LEPRA, la cual se disemino rápidamente en la poblacion, eran los años de 1.529-1800.

Ante el alarmante aumento de los leprosos EL LIBERTADOR SIMON BOLIVAR, creo el LEPROSARIO EN UNA ISLA DEL LAGO de MARACAIBO, llamada PROVIDENCIA. En 1.828 promulgó el decreto donde se ordenaba el levantamiento del leprocomio en el lugar conocido, para ese entonces, como la isla de Los BURROS, después como de LAZARO, también llamada isla de los MARTIRES y finalmente ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA. 

ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA UBICADA EN EL LAGO DE MARACAIBO VENEZUELA

Es por ello que en esta isla se construye el primer hospital anti leproso de Venezuela, un inhóspito lugar que abrigó a más de mil pacientes con lepra, para recluir y aislar esos pacientes con LEPRA y evitar su diseminación en la población sana. 

El tamaño de la isla es de tres kilómetros de largo por dos de ancho y su forma es la de un triángulo irregular.

ISLA DEPROVIDENCIA CLOSE UP VISTA AEREA

El leprosario contaba con 17 pabellones de hospitalización -distribuidos para hombres y mujeres-, una prefectura, una cárcel, plazoletas, dos iglesias (una protestante y otra católica), una biblioteca, un cementerio, una escuela de artes y oficios, un cine, una oficina de correos, un mercado, muelle para la llegada de los científicos, doctores y personal que trabajaba en la isla, casas de habitación para el personal y casas para los enfermos que vivían en pareja. También erigieron una de las plazoletas, a pocos metros de la orilla del lago de Maracaibo.  

MUELLE DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA

Era como una ciudad separada del resto del mundo donde convivían solo los LEPROSOS, con médicos, enfermeras y personal, incluso tenían un dinero "especial"para hacer sus compras.

Esta leproseria funciono hasta el año de 1.984 cuando fue clausurada por el DR. Jacinto Convit quien ya estaba al mando de EL TEMA LEPRA EN VENEZUEA y ya habían surgido los nuevos tratamientos como la DIAMINOFENILSULFONA, CLOFAZIMINE, RIFAMPICINA e inmunoterapia.

Los pacientes que quedaban fueron trasladados al Hospital "Cecilia Pimentel" situado en el sector Palito Blanco.

MONEDA UTILIZADA EN LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA

Pero lo que no saben muchos de ustedes es que EL DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, mi padre, FUE DIRECTOR DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA entre los años 1.949-50 hasta 1.953 aproximadamente.

Pero como es eso posible si no es mencionado casi en ningún lado ???

El ultimo hijo del Dr. Pedro Lapenta Nació en Caracas luego de irse del LEPROCOMIO DE PROVIDENCIA, MI PERSONA quien les esta aclarando que MI PADRE EL DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, NO SOLO fue un tremendo DERMATOLOGO, sino un gran LEPROLOGO al lado de CONVIT.Tengo la evidencias y se las mostrare poco a poco. !


Dermatólogo graduado en la UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DE VENEZUELA (U.C.V.) y segundo a bordo en el "EQUIPO ANTI LEPRA", para esa época. Convit nació en 1.913, el Dr. Lapenta Pedro nació en 1.921.

TRATAMIENTO DE LA LEPRA POR CONVIT Y LAPENTA 1.945

Si tomamos en cuenta la fecha de la creación del LEPROSARIO PRVIDENCIA, pasaron 85 años desde su fundación hasta el nacimiento del DR. Convit y 93 años hasta el nacimiento de mi padre el Dr. Pedro Lapenta. si le agregamos unos 28 años hasta que estos científicos se graduaron, transcurrió un SIGLO desde la creación de PROVIDENCIA.

TRATAMIENTO DE LA LEPRA CON SULFONAS CONVIT Y LAPENTA 1.955

Ambos científicos unieron su ciencia en la lucha contra la LEPRA, no solo fue CONVIT como se dice por allí, ambos (CONVIT-LAPENTA) formaron una gran "LLAVE MAESTRA" en la lucha contra la Lepra.

En el año de 1.948 CONVIT Y LAPENTA, se inmortalizaron en el mundo de la DERMATOLOGIA, al describir el PRIMER CASO DE LEISHMANIASIS CUTANEA DIFUSA ANERGICA, denominada también LEISHMANIASIS HANSENOIDE ANERGICA, cuando estudiaban un paciente con una "SUPUESTA" lepra en el LEPROCOMIO DE CABO BLANCO.

ESTUDIO DE LA LEPRA BORDERLINE, CONVIT Y LAPENTA 1.956

Un año después en 1.949, CONVIT quien estaba al mando, nombro DIRECTOR DEL LEPROSARIO DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA A MI PADRE, EL DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, quien ya casado se fue a vivir al Estado Zulia Maracaibo para encargarse del mismo. Allí nacieron mis dos Hermanos, Una hembra, la mayor en 1.950, y otro varón en 1.953.

Posteriormente fue reenviado de nuevo a Caracas y en esa Ciudad Nació el DR. JOSE LAPENTA, es decir, el que les esta contando esta historia.

Ya entendieron PORQUE EL DERMAGIC EXPRESS ESTA RELACIONADO CON LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA ?? Espero que si.

DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, DIRECTOR DEL LEPROSARIO DE PROVIDENCIA 1.949

Cuenta mi Padre que "Todos los días viajaba en Lanchas llamadas "Bongos" a la ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA" el viaje duraba de 2 a 5 minutos desde el Municipio de Santa Rita a la Isla, la lancha había sido bautizada con un "nombre" el cual no recuerdo. 

Me conto que se enfrentaba a los pacientes leprosos violentos  "... Con un bate de Beisbol..."

Por cierto, un día le pregunté a mi padre por qué nunca había adquirido lepra trabajando con leprosos en los LEPROSARIOS DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA Y CABO BLANCO, por un período de más de 15 años.

A la pregunta me contestó:

- Mira mi antebrazo izquierdo. ¿Ves estas marcas? Son pruebas de MITSUDA, que me inyecto cada año. Luego procedió a explicarme sobre este tema que resumo: 

La prueba MITSUDA la inventó un japonés llamado KENSUKE MITSUDA para los años de 1.919., También llamado PRUEBA DE LEPROMINA. Lo que implica inyectar una pequeña cantidad de Mycobacterium leprae inactivado en el antebrazo, no causan infección. 

La prueba se lee a las 48 horas y luego a las semanas (medida en milímetros), y dependiendo del tamaño de la pápula formada o no en el sitio de la inyección, muestra el estado de RESISTENCIA AL BACILO DE LA LEPRA. 

Kensuke MITSUDA se inmortalizado en la historia de la LEPRA con esta prueba, de hecho basado en ella años más tarde dos científicos llamados Ridley-Jopling propusieron una CLASIFICACIÓN DE LOS TIPOS DE LEPRA, usada hoy día.

Mi padre era MITUSA altamente positivo: eso significa gran resistencia al bacilo de la lepra, por eso nunca la adquirió. De hecho varios de las trabajos que publico junto a CONVIT, son sobre la PRUEBA DE MITSUDA. Te mostrare esos trabajos en el capitulo de CABO BLANCO. 

...." Tenia en el antebrazo mas de 10 marcas de la prueba de MITSUDA, es decir el experimento en si mismo esta PRUEBA. y decía: El MITSUDA inyectado en lapsos de tiempo, siendo positivo (RESISTENTE), te hara resistente, aumenta tu inmunidad contra el Mycobacterium Leprae....."

Creo que tenia razón pues nunca adquirió Lepra estando en contacto con leprosos durante casi 20 años. El mecanismo de contagio de esta enfermedad son las gotas de saliva y el contacto intimo.." ...convivir con leprosos entre 2 y 5 años, mínimo 6 meses a 1 año...decía el.." 

Aquel dia le dije que me inyectara el MITSUDA, y a las semanas el resultado fue positivo. El tenia MITSUDA en su consultorio, su amigo JACINTO CONVIT se lo enviaba desde el HOSPITAL VARGAS hoy INSTITUTO DE BIOMEDICINA.

Como dato histórico RAFAEL LUCIO NAJERA se inoculó con el tipo de lepra que descubrió en el año 1.852 (Lepra lepromatosa difusa-LUCIO'S PHENOMENON, leer AQUÍ) y murió por este experimento en 1.886, de 66 años. 

Mi padre, gracias a Dios que no murió por inyectarse a sí mismo y experimentar con la prueba de Mitsuda, vivió hasta la edad de 90 años.

PACIENTES EN EL "PABELLON COMEDOR" DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA

Luego de 4 a 5 años como DIRECTOR DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA regreso a Caracas, donde continuo su labor COMO DIRECTOR DEL LEPROSARIO DE CABO BLANCO, en La Guaira Estado Vargas. Quiere decir esto que mi padre FUE DIRECTOR DE AMBOS LEPROSARIOS por un espacio de tiempo que según el fue de unos 15 a 18 años, quizá mas, según el me conto. 

Pero esa HISTORIA de CABO BLANCO es la previa a esta edición y también está en los EXPEDIENTES SECRETOS  del DERMAGIC EXPRESS. 

Para el año de 1.964, el DR. Gutiérrez Medico Cirujano muy famoso y dueño de la CLINICA "GUTIERREZ" EN MARACAY ESTADO ARAGUA, convenció al DR. LAPENTA PEDRO, para que formara parte del equipo Medico de dicho centro.

Allí mi Padre decide mudarse A MARACAY ETADO ARAGUA y abandona el campo de la ciencia dejando su "MARCA"  EN EL MUNDO DE LA LEPRA y LEISHMANIASIS, y se dedico el resto de su carrera a la PRACTICA PUBLICA EN el Instituto de Los Seguros Sociales IVSS en Maracay y PRIVADA en la CLINICA GUTIERREZ, hoy CENTRO MEDICO MARACAY y consultorio Particular. 

Pero nunca perdió contacto con la SOCIEDAD VENEZOLANA DE DERMATOLOGIA, de la cual formo parte de su junta directiva varios años, como MIEMBRO TITULAR de la misma. 

El Dr. PEDRO LAPENTA publico numerosos trabajos en conjunto con JACINTO CONVIT, allí le dejo algunos de los mas resaltantes. Quiere decir esto que: 

LOS HOMBRES que mas sabían de LEPRA EN VENEZUELA en esos AÑOS fueron ellos DOS:
CONVIT Y LAPENTA,...el resto es historia. Probablemente existan otros mas... !

RUINAS DE L AISLA DE PROVIDENCIA HOY DIA

ESTA Historia que hoy les narro, es un homenaje a esos dos Científicos, sobre todo MI PADRE, DR PEDRO LAPENTA, que pareciera que la historia quiere "BORRAR" sus honores y méritos. ! Indudablemente, cosa imposible !

RUINAS DE LA ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA, VISTA AEREA

Allí les dejo fotos de sus trabajos con Convit, sobre LA ISLA de PROVIDENCIA, y sus ruinas hoy día, las monedas que se usaban en el LEPROSARIO, los pacientes. Actualmente es UNA ISLA FANTASMA, distintos GOBIERNOS se han planteado proyectos con ella, pero ninguno se ha concretado.

Hay un tercer hombre que tiene que ver mucho con esta historia: su nombre: FERNANDO JOSE LAPENTA, hermano menor de mi Padre. pero ? que relacion tiene este hombre que no fue medico con la LEPRA ?

It is written in history that at the time of the conquest of Venezuela, the Germans (Ambosio de Alfinger) its crew, and Spaniards, a contingent of these entered by the MARACAIBO LAKE.

Several of these conquerors had LEPROSY, which spread rapidly In the population, were the years of 1529-1800.

Due the alarming increase of the lepers SIMON BOLIVAR (the Liberator), I build the LEPROSARIUM IN AN ISLAND OF THE MARACAIBO LAKE called PROVIDENCE. In 1.828 he issued the decree ordering the lifting of the leprocomium in the place known then, as the island of The DONKIES, then as LAZARUS, also called the island of MARTYRS and finally ISLAND OF PROVIDENCE.

That is why in this island is built the first anti-leprosy hospital in Venezuela, an inhospitable place that had more than a thousand patients with leprosy, to isolate those patients with LEPROSY and avoid its dissemination in the healthy population.

The size of the island is three kilometers long by two wide and its shape is that of an irregular triangle.

The leprosarium had  17 pavilions for hospitalization - distributed for men and women -, a prefecture, a prison, squares, two churches (one Protestant and one Catholic), a library, a cemetery, a school of arts and crafts, a cinema, Mail, a market, dock for the arrival of the Scientists, doctors, room staff who worked on the island and houses for the sick who lived as a couple. They also erected one of the squares, a few meters from the shore of Maracaibo Lake.

It was like a city separated from the rest of the world where only LEPERS lived together, With doctors, nurses and staff, even had "special" money to do their shopping.

This leprosarium worked until the year of 1.984 when it was closed by the DR. Jacinto Convit who already was in command of THE LEPROSY THEME IN VENEZUEA and had already arisen the new treatments like THE DIAMINODIPHENYLSULPHONE, CLOFAZIMINE,  RIFAMPICIN and immunotherapy.

The remaining patients were transferred to the "Cecilia Pimentel" Hospital located in the Palito Blanco sector.

But what many of you do not know is that DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, my father, WAS DIRECTOR OF THE PROVIDENCE ISLAND between the years 1.949-50 until 1.953 approximately.

 But how is that possible if it is not mentioned almost anywhere ???

The last son of Dr. Pedro Lapenta I was born in Caracas after leaving the PROVIDENCIA LEPROSARIUM , MY PERSON who is clarifying that, MY FATHER DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, NOT ONLY he was a tremendous DERMATOLOGIST, but A great LEPROLOGIST on the side of CONVIT.I have the evidence and I will show you piece by piece. !

Dermatologist graduated from CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF VENEZUELA (U.C.V.) and second on board in the "ANTI LEPROSY TEAM", for that time. Convit was born in 1.913, Dr. Lapenta Pedro was born in 1.921.

If we take into account the date of the creation of the PROVIDENCIA LEPROSARIUM, 85 years passed from its foundation to the date of birth of DR. Convit, and 93 years until the birth of my father Dr. Lapenta. If we add about 28 years until these scientists graduated, is a CENTURY from the creation of PROVIDENCE.

Both scientists joined their science in the fight against LEPROSY, not only was CONVIT as it is said there, both (CONVIT-LAPENTA) Formed a great "MASTER KEY" in the fight against Leprosy.

In the year of 1.948 CONVIT and LAPENTA, they immortalized themselves in the world of DERMATOLOGY, when describing the FIRST CASE OF ANERGIC DISSEMINATED CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS, also denominated ANERGIC HANSENOID LEISHMANIASIS when they studied a patient with a "SUPPOSED" leprosy in LEPROSARIUM OF CAPE WHITE (CABO BLANCO).

A year later in 1.949, CONVIT who was in charge, I appoint DIRECTOR OF THE LEPROSARIUM OF THE ISLAND OF PROVIDENCE TO MY FATHER, DR. PEDRO LAPENTA, who already married went to live in the State of Zulia Maracaibo to take care of it. There were born my two brothers, one female, the older in 1.950, and another male in 1.953.

Later it was sent back to Caracas and in that City Born the DR. JOSE LAPENTA, me, The one who is telling you this story.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHY THE DERMAGIC EXPRESS IS RELATED TO THE ISLAND OF PROVIDENCE ?? Hope so.

My Father tells me that "Every day I traveled by boat called "Bongos" to the ISLAND OF PROVIDENCE" the trip lasted 2 to 5 minutes, From the Municipality of Santa Rita to the Island, in a boat that had been baptized with a "name" which I do not remember.

He told me faced violent lepers patients "... with a baseball bat ..."

By the way one day I asked my father why he had never acquired leprosy, working with lepers in the PROVIDENCIA ISLAND and CAPE WHITE LEPROSERIES, for a period of time of more than 15 years.

To the question he answered me:

- Look at my left forearm. Do you see these marks? Are tests of MITSUDA, which I inject every year. Then I proceeded to explain myself on this subject which summarized:

The MITSUDA test  invented a Japanese named KENSUKE MITSUDA for the years of 1.919., Also called TEST OF LEPROMINE. Which involves injecting a small amount of inactivated Mycobacterium leprae into the forearm, they do not cause infection.

My father was highly positive MITUSA: that means great resistance to the Leprosy bacillus. That's why he never got it. In fact several of the works that I publish with CONVIT, are on the TEST OF MITSUDA. I will show you these works in and chapter of WHITE CAPE.

.... Hhad on the forearm more than 10 marks of the test of MITSUDA, that means he experiment in itself this TEST and said: The MITSUDA injected in periods of time, being positive (RESISTENT), will make you resistant, Increase your immunity against Mycobaterium Leprae ..... "

I think he was right because he never got leprosy when he was in contact with lepers for almost 20 years. The mechanism of contagion of this disease are drops of spits and the intimate contact ... "...coexist with lepers between 2 and 5 years, minimum 6 months to 1 year ...  he said  .."

 That day I told him to inject me the MITSUDA TEST, and in the weeks the result was positive. He had MITSUDA in his office, his friend JACINTO CONVIT sent it from VARGAS HOSPITAL today BIOMEDICIN INSTITUTE.

As a HISTORICAL DATA RAFAEL LUCIO NAJERA inoculated himself with the type of leprosy That he discovered in the year 1.852 (Diffuse lepromatous leprosy-LUCIO'S PHENOMENON, read HERE) and died by this experiment in 1.886, aged 66.

My father, thank God he did not die for injecting himself and experimenting with the Mitsuda test, lived until the age of 90.

After 4 to 5 years as DIRECTOR OF THE ISLAND OF PROVIDENCE returned to Caracas, where he continued his work AS DIRECTOR OF LEPOSARIUM OF WHITE CAPE, in La Guaira State of Vargas. Means that my father WAS DIRECTOR OF BOTH LEPROSARIUM for a space Of time that according to he, was of about 15 to 18 years, maybe more, as he told me.

But that HISTORY of WHITE CAPE (CABO BLANCO) is also in the edition of the X FILES of the DERMAGIC EXPRESS.

For the year of 1.964, DR. Gutiérrez Medic Very famous surgeon and owner of "GUTIERREZ" CLINIC IN MARACAY ESTATE ARAGUA, convinced DR. LAPENTA PEDRO, for be part of the medical team of said center.

There my father decides to move to MARACAY ARAGUA state and leaves the field of science leaving his "BRAND" IN THE WORLD OF LEPROSY and LEISHMANIASIS, and is dedicated to the rest of his career to PUBLIC PRACTICE at the Institute of Social Security IVSS in Maracay and at the GUTIERREZ CLINIC, today called MARACAY MEDICAL CENTER, and private practice.

But I never lost contact with the VENEZUELAN SOCIETY OF DERMATOLOGY, of which I have been a member of its board of directors for several years, as a  MEMBER of the same.

Dr. PEDRO LAPENTA publishes many works together with JACINTO CONVIT, there I leave some of the most Highlighters This means that:

THE MEN With greater knowledge ABOUT LEPROSY IN VENEZUELA IN THOSE YEARS WERE TWO: CONVIT AND LAPENTA, the rest is history...Probably there are others more ...!

AND THIS STORY That today I narrate to you, it is a tribute to the two Scientists, especially MY FATHER, DR PEDRO LAPENTA, that would seem That history wants to "ERASE" its honors and merits. !Undoubtedly impossible mission !

Today PROVIDENCE it is A PHANTOM ISLAND, different GOVERNMENTS have been proposed projects with her, but none has materialized.

There is a third man who has much to do with this story: his name: FERNANDO JOSE LAPENTA, younger brother from my father. But what relationship has this man who was not a doctor with LEPROSY ?
